Akshay Kapoor

Hey everyone! My name is Akshay Kapoor and I am the Secretary of Diversity for the current administration. I was born and brought up in Massachusetts, having lived in Boxborough for most of my life. I graduated in 2009 from Acton-Boxborough Regional High School… I still have that Colonial pride. I grew up playing many sports for my town including Track and Football. I am also a huge Patriots and Celtics fan so stop by anytime if you want to talk Boston Sports. Here at UMass I am involved in many clubs and organizations as well as being an RA in Washington Tower in Southwest. I am very involved with Greek Life here on Campus and have held various roles at my fraternity; Theta Chi. I am a junior this year with majors in Public Health and Sociology, on a pre-med track planning to go onto Medical School after graduation.

As Secretary of Diversity my job entails making sure the issues affecting the various Diverse, Multicultural, Religious, as well as Greek groups here on campus get heard. It is my responsibility to make sure these groups have a voice that can faithfully advocate for them in the Student Government. I work directly for the President of the SGA, who was elected this past spring, and sit on his Executive Cabinet. It is my job to follow through with his plans as well as advise him on the issues that affect these groups. It is also my duty to try to foster a more diverse environment here on campus and try to get students involved in the various groups that we offer here at the University.

While the school year seems to go by faster than we realize, I have a large agenda planned for this year and would like to see a great deal of change. It is my goal to work closely with the Greek community here at UMass and closer bridge them with the rest of campus. It my true belief that the Greek Community has a lot to offer and through the countless fundraising and charity events that they conduct and I believe that many more students will be able to be involved and work together for a greater good if this gap is bridged. I also hope to work closely with the newly structured multicultural centers and put on entertaining events to create awareness as well an enjoyable atmosphere here on campus. Many of the resources at UMass go unnoticed and I hope to make them more available and transparent to the student body. Furthermore, I hope to be able to ensure that many of the smaller diverse groups on campus are able to stay on campus and do not lose their funding. I truly believe that we have an amazing and dynamic student body here at UMass, and I hope to further foster that through my position. Always feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns, or just drop at my office to say hi. I am extremely open and approachable so please come to me with any issues you might be facing.

Looking forward to a great year,
Akshay
