Janam Anand

My name is Janam Anand and this is my second year serving the student body as the Secretary of the Registry. As Secretary of the Registry, I work with students who are looking to form new groups on campus. I also work with RSO advisors to allocate office spaces in the Student Union, while using some of my time to promote and attend RSO events. I often see my job as sort of open-ended, in the sense that the possibilities are endless, and reaching out to student groups is not only fun, but also a wonderfully rewarding experience. On a different note, I was born in India, and lived in Kuwait until I was about nine years old, at which point my family immigrated to the United States. Since then, I have lived in Ocean City, New Jersey. This, alone, makes me the butt of all jokes among my friends. Growing up in a small resort town, I have always wanted to expand my horizons and be part of a community that values diversity, varied interests, and gets riled up about social issues. I saw all of these qualities, plus more at UMass, which made me choose this campus among the other schools I had applied to.

Before getting involved in student government, I had served as Vice President of the Webster/Dickinson House Council, which sparked my interest in student life and community building. Besides serving on the cabinet, I am also involved in greek life, as a part of Sigma Kappa Sorority. Furthermore, I am a member of a community service organization that strives towards twenty or more hours of service per semester. Alongside all of these activities, I am a BDIC Legal Theory major, and take particular interest in social justice issues pertaining to inclusivity and equality. In my free time, I contribute to the College Candy blog as a staff person, and I also run my own personal humor blog. I am a twitter addict, and am constantly soliciting people to follow me. I live, breathe, and follow my zodiac sign (Aquarius), I hoard shoes, have a seemingly creepy obsession with stationary, and I drink a ton of coffee. Soy lattés are my favorite, and I make a mean guacamole. If you ever have any ideas, suggestions, concerns, or just want to chit chat, I pretty much live out of the SGA office, so don’t ever hesitate to drop by!

Why Do Shoppers Feel Like Cranberry Sauce on Black Friday?

Each year, as the American public crumbles at the knees and gives into the most palpable face of capitalism, I take a moment to reflect on the hype behind the biggest shopping holiday of the year. Somewhere between “Candyween” and “CreditCardMas” falls Thanksgiving–what is generically accepted as a day to feast, watch football, bond with [...]

Sorry I’m Not Sorry

There was a time when the words “I’m sorry” were powerful. They were words that, sitting in the corner in time-out, with arms crossed and brows furrowed, we refused to utter. We would sit there all day and go to bed early, but we would never speak those two little words. Many pivotal moments in [...]

The Dumbing Down of Our Education?

As six o’clock p.m. roles around, I grudgingly reach for my bag, whip out my agenda, and glance through the list of homework items I have penciled in for the evening. Of that list, I put asterisks next to the assignments that involve online quizzes based on textbook or web readings, and checks next to [...]

Something Tastes Different.

My name is Janam Anand, and I am a stress seeker. According to a recent article in Women’s Health, stress seekers are “addicted to high-anxiety lifestyles … because somewhere along the line being stretched to the limit turned into a badge of honor.” I know about when it happened for me. My freshman year of [...]
