The Office of the Speaker is comprised of 7 individuals: The Speaker of the Senate, the Associate Speaker, and 5 Special Assistants who work for the Speaker to help the Committee Chairs with their committees.
Speaker of the Senate – The Speaker of the Senate is the head of the SGA Senate at UMass Amherst. He or she presides over every Senate meeting, appoints all the members to all Senate committees, is the chief spokesperson of the Senate, plans and facilitates SGA training, and generally acts as one of the primary SGA officers on campus. The Speaker, along with the Student Trustee and the SGA President, is one of the top three SGA positions and therefore is expected to be a real voice of the student body to the campus administration and surrounding community. The current Speaker is Sïonan Barrett.
Associate Speaker – The Associate Speaker is the Speaker’s right hand and assistant. He/she takes the minutes of the Senate and serves as its chief parliamentarian. They also act in the place of the Speaker in such cases where the Speaker isn’t able to do carry out a duty. Together the Associate Speaker and Speaker run, direct, and guide the SGA Senate. The current Associate Speaker is Madison Goldstein.
Special Assistants – the Special Assistants work with the Speaker and committee chairs to make sure the SGA’s committees are working as smoothly as possible. The current Special Assistants have not yet been chosen. If interested, please e-mail the Speaker at sga.speaker@stuaf.umass.edu.
